Event Description

I'm happy to announce the first Code Retreat of 2010 in Grand Rapids, MI. Atomic Object will be providing the space as well as food.

We will be pairing, and where necessary tripling on Conway's Game of Life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life) for ~45 minutes, then retrospecting for ~15 minutes before we throw out the code we've worked on and start it all over again. We'll likely leverage the Cucumber features that Corey Haines has so graciously put together for this particular problem domain (http://github.com/coreyhaines/practice_game_of_life).

Note: This code retreat will be done in Ruby. We won't be spending time getting Ruby set up on machines, nor learning Ruby. If you are coming, please make sure that you have Ruby installed and working, as well as an editor of your choice. Any gems that you normally use (rspec, shoulda, cucumber, rails, etc.) should be already installed. Code Retreat is not intended to be a language learning day, rather a practicing/honing of what you know.

Jeremy: do you have a github Game of Life project template to get us started quickly? I'll be using RubyMine, not that it matters.

I do not have a project template setup yet, but will work on it over the next few weeks leading up to the retreat. I'll also work on a list of things you should have working on your laptop prior to arriving at code retreat, though I know there will inevitably be people who won't have this done just as with the tutorial I gave at GLSEC this week.

Well, I have decided to move the date back a couple of weeks because of many scheduling conflicts. The new date is now set for February 6th. Hopefully more people will be able to make it now.

Sadly, I'm in Bangalore in January, but I hope you guys have fun out there!

I'm hoping to attend. There could be something that comes in the way, but I'm going to do my best.
