Barbara Wilkins Speech Writing: How To Write A Good One?

Speech writing is in lots of ways similar writing a paper, apart from that there is no penalty for spelling and punctuation mistakes. You should not try to write words in your speech that you are not relaxed pronouncing or don't know the meaning of because it can lead to a less fluently delivered speech. To be able to write a high-quality speech is a lot like making a good cake. Having the right elements is key for it's success. Every… Continue

Adrian Mowat Report from Code Retreat UK

The UK's first code retreat was held yesterday in Glasgow and (although I am biased) it was a fantastic day and I think everyone enjoyed it immensely and, as far as I can tell, everyone learned something new. Here's my report of the day and the events leading up to it. Please feel free to comment if you have anything to add, or ask questions if there is anything I can help you with. Rob Lally, Joe Wright and I organised the event. We started talking about it in mid-September and set the date of… Continue

Sebastian Hermida My learnings at Code Retreat Philadelphia

11 people attended the first Code Retreat in Philadelphia. We started a little before 10 AM. We thanked the sponsors, reviewed the game of life and surveyed the group about their Java and Test First knowledge in order to better match everyone for the first pairing session. We ran 3 iterations of 40 minutes before lunch. After each iteration, we regrouped for 5 to 10 minutes to talk about what people found interesting about their last session. Some people experimented with programming facing e… Continue

Guðlaugur Egilsson Second Code Retreat Reykjavík

The second Code Retreat in Reykjavík will be held on Saturday 7th of November, at Calidris ehf, Vesturhlid 7, Reykjavík. Calidris will sponsor this second code retreat event and provide lunch and light refreshments in the afternoon. At the same time, it is the intent to found an agile.is interest group around Code Craftsmanship. The aim of such a group is to promote the importance of coding skills and high quality code, as opposed to the emphasis on high level design and architecture which has… Continue

Patrick Wilson-Welsh How to Run a CodeRetreat

I've been asked on-line and off-line for this recently, so here it is. Corey Haines and J.B. Rainsberger and I are mostly converging on the following recipe for running something you want to call a CodeRetreat. This recipe may evolve, but our collective desire is that if you diverge very much from this recipe, however useful that divergence may be, you do not call your diverge… Continue

J. B. Rainsberger CodeRetreat with empty Eclipse project on github

Fellow CodeRetreaters: Given the time we spent futzing with git at the beginning of the Toronto 2009 event, I have just created a git repository at github that you can clone to start from an empty Eclipse project. git clone git://github.com/jbrains/coderetreat-eclipse.git Some enterprising soul can create the corresponding IDEA one if they like. Thanks. Continue

J. B. Rainsberger We had fun at PlateSpin in Toronto

Once again, I want to thank PlateSpin, Corey Haines, and Intelliware for their involvement in putting on Code Retreat Toronto 2009. I especially want to thank Mike DiBernando, who asked me to let him organize everything, and who delivered tremendously, with food, working equipment, and a great space. I couldn't ask for a better organizer. I had a great time at the event itself. We managed to get through, I believe, six iterations of working on Conway's Game of Life, plus a demonstration of a s… Continue

Patrick Wilson-Welsh Rob Park's ATDD/TDD Game of Life blog post

Hi All: At CodeRetreat MI-7-11-09, we did some "whole application, customer-perspective" ATDD, using JBehave, that we have not done at past CodeRetreats. I hope the lessons learned will infect and assist future CodeRetreats. Rob Park has summarized it all beautifully here: http://agileintention.blogspot.com/2009/07/top-down.html Cheers, and thanks, Rob! --Patrick Continue

Richard Dammkoehler The relationship of CleanCode and Test-First

I'm working on some training materials for Test First, and as I mull it over I think there is a clear relationship between good OO skills and Test First. Similarly, Clean Code and Test First must go together. Then I think about stuff like LoD, DRY, IoC (all the good acronyms) and wonder, what am I missing. I'm kinda working in isolation, topics like this are not frequently discussed (if at all) in this environment. I'm working to change that, but I thought I might survey other smart folk and see… Continue

Patrick Wilson-Welsh CodeRetreat #2 will Fill Up Fast

Hey Guys. We will likely top off the attendance at CodeRetreat #2 at around 40 people; otherwise it gets too unwieldy. Since it is still more than a month away and we already have 6 folks signed up, please sign up soon if you are serious about attending. We haven't begun yet to pound the Pillar ranks of coders looking for attendees, nor the very large network of coders known to LeanDog in Cleveland. That's when the floodgates will op… Continue

Patrick Wilson-Welsh Fair Warning: We'll Pair on Everything

I read a recent post on a local technical user's group thread. It was all about how this guy hates pair programming, which I personally am addicted to, and which I believe is an essential practice and skill for agile teams. At work, you may not pair, you may not want to pair, or you may want to pair all the time. No matter. Fair warning: at CodeRetreat, we will pair on everything. No code will be written without at least two people looking at it while it is being written. The rationale is stra… Continue
